Carnegie Learning

Carnegie Learning® Cognitive Tutor® is a software program developed at Carnegie Mellon University. The Cognitive Tutor is built on cognitive models that represent the knowledge a student might possess about mathematics and algebra. The software assesses the prior mathematical knowledge of students on a step-by-step basis and presents curricula tailored to individual skill levels.

One of two exemplary mathematics programs in the country

Learning Zone is the only after-school service in the nation licensed to use the Cognitive Tutor. The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Cognitive Tutor as one of only two "exemplary" mathematics programs in the country.

Developed at Carnegie Mellon University

The Carnegie Learning Cognitive Tutor was developed at Carnegie Mellon University as a research project. The success in the Pittsburgh Public Schools inspired the transition to a commercial model whereby the effective curricula could be widely disseminated to schools around the country.

Research

During the 2002-03 school year, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools commissioned an independent research study by the Reliability Group to examine the effectiveness of the Cognitive Tutor versus conventional curricula. The study compared the performance of 6,395 students in 10 high schools on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The Cognitive Tutor students' FCAT scores were significantly higher than those of the students completing conventional Algebra I. View Full Report

Today the Carnegie Learning Cognitive Tutor is in use in more than 1700 schools across the country. Research continues to show dramatic student improvements with Cognitive Tutor when compared to traditional approaches of instruction.
