The Cognitive Tutor ®

To meet students’ learning needs, we utilize specific portions of Carnegie Learning’s highly acclaimed Cognitive Tutor software, and augment the software with print-based curriculum materials developed by a team of WestEd’s mathematics experts. The Cognitive Tutor mathematics program offers a groundbreaking approach to improving student performance. Based on a cognitive model that simulates the ways in which students think about and attack mathematics problems, the programs engage students in real-world, problem-solving activities, so they can connect prior knowledge with the new skills and concepts they learn.

  • The software responds to every student's individual problem-solving strategies.

  • The software assesses student progress on mastering skills and concepts, and then diagnostically assigns problems based on each student's strengths, weaknesses, and individual problem-solving approach.

  • Individualized instruction provides opportunities to learn, practice, and master new concepts and skills.

  • Feedback is immediate and dynamic.

  • The software simulates one-on-one "coaching" situation between a student and a dedicated tutor.
