Basic Numeracy Students may understand the processes but not the structure of a number system. They may be "algorithmically competent" but not see relationships and differences among systems, sometimes inappropriately over-generalizing and other times failing to transfer appropriate learnings within and between systems. The Learning Zone Basic Numeracy modules target basic math skills as they apply to and are used in algebra. The lessons in these modules provide a logical sequence for learning. Applications and word problems are embedded in the tasks, including using formulas and translating word problems into equations. Students check answers for reasonableness as well as for accuracy. The first module in the Basic Numeracy sequence is "Signed Number Operations."
