Proportional Reasoning

The Proportional Reasoning curriculum module has students make comparisons, distinguishing between additive (absolute) and multiplicative (relative) thinking. Students learn to use ratios and rates to make statements about one measurement in relation to another. They distinguish the difference between the numeric value of the ratio and what it represents and are able to determine equivalent ratios and to compare ratios.

The concept of scale and similar figures is applied in various contexts.

Several strategies are developed to solve proportions: ratio tables, equivalent fractions, and solving proportions algebraically.

Students use proportions to convert units of measure, and to solve familiar proportional reasoning problems such as work, mixture and distance/rate problems. Proportional reasoning strategies are used to make sense of data from real-world applications.
