Philosophy Even students who master arithmetic may still struggle with algebra. Many algebra textbooks compound this problem by focusing on formulas and drills rather than on the underlying mathematical thinking. Learning Zone™ employs a long-term approach to teaching, or re-teaching, mathematical fundamentals critical to success in algebra. Learning Zone is not designed as tutoring for a specific class, or SAT preparation. Instead, Learning Zone students work closely with a credentialed mathematics teacher and trained coaches who focus on the fundamentals. The powerful combination of Learning Zone's individualized diagnostics, and personalized instruction led by credentialed teachers, accelerates a student's progress and comprehension. As a result, student's homework, grades, test scores and confidence improve. Method The Learning Zone method employs diagnostics, instruction, print-based curriculum, guided practice, exercises, and computer software. Diagnostics, conducted for each student through our Learning Gap Assessment, identify the unique learning challenges of each student. Based on research into each student's needs and learning deficiencies in algebra, Learning Zone creates a set of student-customized learning objectives. For each learning objective, a series of task-based lessons has been developed. These lessons have been designed based on in-depth analyses to determine the skills students must master to accomplish a lesson successfully. Learning Zone coaches work with each student to complete the unique set of lessons targeted toward that individual student's sets of learning objectives.
